Ongoing Projects
ENGAGING LAWMAKERS AND JUDGES IN ANGLOPHONE AFRICA TO PROMOTE ACCOUNTABILITY, ACCESS TO JUSTICE, AND RIGHTS-BASED LAWS
Our project Engaging Lawmakers and Judges in Anglophone Africa to Promote Accountability, Access to Justice, and Rights-Based Laws is being implemented in five African Countries: Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria. The project has a two -pronged approach. To engage parliamentarians and the judiciary through law and policy reform for remedies for PATBs whose rights are violated, including a justice system that is sensitized with PATB rights. Secondly, is to create an empowered TB movement that will carry out advocacies and other interventions towards reducing stigma and discrimination and promotion of PATB rights. This project underscores the significance of integrating human rights principles into TB laws and policies. By addressing legal gaps, promoting accountability, and documenting rights violations associated with TB, the project will substantially contribute to the ongoing efforts to combat TB in Africa and improve access to justice for all.
DEEPENING TB MOVEMENT AND THE USE OF LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN TB RESPONSE
With the support of Stop TB Partnership, Lawyers Alert is implementing a project “Deepening TB Movement and the Use of Law and Human Rights in TB response” in Lagos and FCT-Abuja. Under this project, TB coalitions in Lagos and Abuja are supported to carry out advocacy actions towards advancing Community, Rights and Gender (CRG)
intervention in their joint action plan developed under CFCS Round 11. Furthermore, rights violations associated with TB are being collated and documented to provide scientific findings on gender and right based violation associated with TB using LADOCK. Lawyers Alert is also carrying out rigorous legal literacy and awareness creation on issues of CRG to enhance access to legal remedies and Legal support to PATBs suffering right violations in Lagos and Abuja. This will be achieved through community rights and gender interventions, including community -led monitoring and strategic impact litigation. This project is funded by the STop TB Partnership.
ADVANCING CAPACITY AND REDUCING VULNERABILITY IN NIGERIA PROJECT
In partnership with the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF), this project is focused on protecting the rights of sexual minorities, particularly, MSM, and contributing not just to ending HIV but also laws that are barriers to this. Lawyers Alert is strengthening and equipping small and medium-size sexual minority organizations and community leaders to carry out evidence-based advocacy and confidently and effectively change narratives and reduce violations and vulnerability of the communities. This will ultimately result in strong, resilient, and sustainable local SRHR responses that challenge stigma and discrimination and eliminate barriers to freedom and service access. 1. SECURING NIGERIAN COMMUNITIES PROJECT
This intervention by Lawyers Alert, in partnership with Equal Access International under the Securing Nigerian Communities Project, aims to improve security through increased community participation and awareness creation, enhancing the safety of local communities, particularly those most vulnerable to attacks and violent crises.
Through the project, community accountability forums and structures are established in Guma, Gwer West, and Agatu LGAs, Benue State to enable local community members to partner with formal security agencies, forming Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) systems. The Community Accountability Forum (CAF) and the Civilian Security Platform (CSP), established at the ward level, are responsible for identifying potential crises and acting as the response unit.
EMPOWERING COMMUNITY POLICING COMMITTEES TOWARDS A RIGHTS-BASED APPROACH TO SECURITY
Lawyers Alert, in partnership with the Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), is implementing the " Empowering Community Policing Committees Towards a Rights-Based Approach to Security " project in Cameroon and Nigeria.

CONSOLIDATING ADVOCACY FOR EFFECTIVE JUSTICE DELIVERY FOR SURVIVORS OF SGBV IN NIGERIA
The "Consolidating Advocacy for Effective Justice Delivery for Survivors of SGBV in Nigeria" project, implemented by the Sexual and Gender-Based Justice Network (SJN) Cluster led by Lawyers Alert, aims to enhance the implementation of the Violence against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL). This initiative seeks to create a more efficient, reliable, and effective justice system, along with improved agency responses and support services for survivors of abuse, specifically within the frameworks of the VAPP and ACJL laws across the targeted states.
Implemented in five states—Bauchi, Benue, Enugu, Kaduna, and Osun—in partnership with Palladium and supported by USAID, the project aims to achieve rapid justice service delivery for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Nigeria. It engages key stakeholders crucial to the activation of VAPP and ACJL laws within these locations.
Now in its second year, SJN Cluster continues to strengthen existing partnerships, focusing on effectively implementing VAPP and ACJL laws to ensure swift justice and resolution of SGBV cases towards a sustainable and responsive justice system for GBV survivors in Nigeria.
