Lawyers Alert Seeks the Intervention the Nigeria Police on Behalf of an Abused Teenager who has also been Abandoned

Joy Josephís case with Solomon Isah

Facts of the Case

Sometime in 2017, Joy Joseph who was 17 years old then, was residing at Kokona Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa state when one Solomon Isah, also a native of Kokona LGA offered to relocate her to Abuja where he would provide her with a good job and accommodation so she could save money and go back to school. On the strength of this promise, Joy accompanied Solomon to Abuja. Howevver, upon arriving Abuja, Solomon imprisoned the young lady in his private house and proceeded to turn her into a sex toy. All talks of getting her a job were cast aside while he subjected her to assault and battery in the presence of neighbours. Joy soon gave birth to Solomonís son who, probably owing to lack of adequate care and nutrition, looked frail, malnourished and sickly as at the time she came to Lawyers Alert/COLaHRís office for help. Lawyers Alert, in conjunction with COLaHR, tried to reach Solomonin hopes of getting to the bottom of the matter. Solomon spurned all attempts to be engaged preferring instead to start threatening to kill Joy if he was ever called upon again by any human rights group.

Joyís condition and that of the child deteriorated following Solomonís ejection of her from his home and subsequent abandonment.. When all efforts to reach out to Solomon proved abortive, Lawyers Alert, in collaboration with COLaHR, petitioned the IGP and the Gender Force Adviser, Force CID Area 10 Garki, Abuja, on 26/04/19. The police is yet to act on the petition and investigate Lawyers Alert and COLaHR have however, kept tabs on the matter and will keep doing so until the police take the necessary action. Meanwhile, internal investigations show that Solomon may be charged with Child Trafficking, Child Abuse, Rape, Gross Indecency, Assault and Battery. Updates will be posted as new developments arise.
