The @lawyersalertnigeria Team just concluded a two-day virtual retreat themed “Building Bridges, Igniting Innovations, and Amplifying Partners’ Voices.”

Over the course of the retreat, we engaged in insightful sessions on data readiness and explored how AI can be leveraged as a tool for innovative approaches to better serve underserved communities. The team also had a refresher on our core values and what truly matters to us as an organization. Through interactive virtual exercises, we strengthened our bond as a team and reinforced our collective commitment to our mission.

At the end of the two-day retreat, we collaboratively set strategic goals and presented a roadmap for our 2026–2029 strategy, ensuring a more impactful and inclusive approach to serving underserved populations, particularly women and girls.

Appreciation to @gad_peter1 for taking the team through resourceful techniques to enhance workflow, professionally and personally.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains one of the most severe human rights violations, affecting over 230 million girls and women worldwide. As of 2024, millions continue to suffer its devastating physical and psychological consequences. Despite global efforts, FGM remains widely practiced in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
This harmful tradition inflicts lifelong trauma on women and girls, standing as a major barrier to achieving gender equality.

While cultural and traditional practices are valuable, they should only be preserved when they are harmless and promote equality. Any practice that oppresses or harms a group of people violates human rights and must be abolished.

What Can We Do Together?
This year’s theme is “Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM.” Ending this practice requires strong partnerships and collective action.

✔ Build a movement to end FGM through advocacy and awareness.
✔ Sensitize local communities including traditional rulers, women, men, boys, girls, and healthcare practitioners on its dangers.
✔ Strengthen and implement protective laws, such as the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, to safeguard women and girls.

Strengthening Justice for SGBV Survivors in Benue State ⚖️

Following Lawyers Alert submission of a draft of a proposed review of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law of Benue State, the Ministry of Justice team set up to review the submission held a meeting with LA to align thoughts.

The meeting focused on reviewing key provisions of the VAPP Law, addressing legal backing for SARCs, special courts for SGBV cases, funding, and a monitoring committee for implementation.

The Benue State Ministry of Justice has committed to fast-tracking the review process to ensure survivors of SGBV receive the justice they deserve. Together, we can build a safer and more just society! 🤝

Lawyers Alert Nigeria engaged in high-level advocacy with the Special Adviser on Security and Internal Affairs to Benue State, highlighting the Community Policing Project funded by the Open Society Foundations(OSF) and its critical relevance to security in the state. The meeting aimed to secure the government of Benue State’s buy-in on the community policing models implemented by Lawyers Alert, which foster collaboration between community members and security architecture to address local security concerns, install EWER and restore trust.

Discussions also explored ways to replicate these efforts across LGAs in Benue State, expanding security awareness and education to help residents navigate and sustain their livelihoods amid security challenges. The Special Adviser expressed his commitment to supporting initiatives that build trust between communities and security agencies.

Lawyers Alert’s Community Policing Project brings together youth, women, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and security architectures in the state to engage in dialogues that restore trust and enhance community security.

At the start of 2025, Lawyers Alert Nigeria, as a member of the Steering Committee for the Benue State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), continue our pursuit of reducing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and ensuring the protection and support of survivors.

As part of these efforts, we participated in the first Steering Committee meeting of the year for the Centre. The meeting focused on key issues, including the urgent need to finalize the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL), which was reviewed by Lawyers Alert, and submit it to the Benue State House of Assembly for passage into law, addressing gaps in the existing legislation.

At the start of 2025, Lawyers Alert Nigeria, as a member of the Steering Committee for the Benue State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), continue our pursuit of reducing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and ensuring the protection and support of survivors.

As part of these efforts, we participated in the first Steering Committee meeting of the year for the Centre. The meeting focused on key issues, including the urgent need to finalize the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL), which was reviewed by Lawyers Alert, and submit it to the Benue State House of Assembly for passage into law, addressing gaps in the existing legislation.

Lawyers Alert is attending the Stop TB Partnership “United in Advocacy to End TB” meeting in Istanbul, Turkey 🇹🇷.

The meeting is delving into Regional Snapshots to include country interventions, new tools and gaps, aligning national and global level advocacy, and developing key messaging and approaches.

This week, we presented an overview of our program implementation, highlighting progress made and challenges encountered in addressing rights-related issues associated with tuberculosis and engagement with stakeholders. This was during the quarterly meeting of the National Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilization (ACSM) Technical Working Group for the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Control Program (NTBLCP). Advancing Capacity, Sharing Lessons: Reflecting on a Year of Reducing Vulnerabilities

Today, Lawyers Alert held a lesson-sharing event as part of the EJAF-supported project to advance the capacity of KP and sexual minority-led organizations and reduce their vulnerabilities in Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa States.

This gathering brought together partners (
IcevsNigeria, HAHAI, Olive Right to Health Initiative - ORHI) and stakeholders to reflect on the first year of implementation. Key highlights included state-by-state presentations of successes, challenges, and lessons learned, as well as facilitated discussions on improving engagement with government stakeholders and addressing recurring challenges.

The discussions did not just stop at reflection, they set the stage for actionable next steps and long-term strategies for year 2 and sustainability, ensuring the impact of this work extends far beyond the project timeline.

We’re grateful to the Elton John AIDS Foundatyfor their support and to all stakeholders for their dedication to advancing human rights for key populations and sexual minorities in Nigeria.

Today, Lawyers Alert paid an advocacy visit to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Nigeria to explore opportunities for collaboration on security sector accountability with the aim of advancing the rights of vulnerable groups in Nigeria.

During the engagement, shared values on the advancement of human rights in Nigeria were emphasized.

A key outcome of the meeting was the establishment of pathways for partnership to advance human rights initiatives in the country.

The visit also strengthened Lawyers Alert’s synergy with relevant stakeholders, enhancing the deployment of interventions aimed at preserving human rights and dignity across Nigeria.
